Students will learn how to write code using Python and the unique features of the programming language.
This program is for children aged 9 to 12 years at the start of the program.
They will gain knowledge of fundamental coding concepts such as loops and conditional statements. By the end of the course students should be able to write a basic application with some assistance.
Cost: $60
Program runs weekly on Mondays from May 2-30. Please note that there is no class on May 23!
This program will be hosted on Zoom.
Priority will be given to confirmed RHPL members.
Please Note: Participants will use their own computer to code from home. Before registering, test the compatibility of your computer at: https://www.jetbrains.com/pycharm/download/
Two computers may be required to participate. One computer to code with, and one computer to watch the coding instructor using Zoom video conferencing software.
Instructor bio:
Keke Zhou has taught coding at RHPL since 2016. She also teaches a variety of different programming languages and gaming engines at libraries, community centers, and colleges across the GTA. Keke is a York University graduate with a degree in Digital Media studies, specializing in computer science and fine arts.
How to access the program:
In order to participate in this program, you'll need to log in to Zoom using a secure link and password. This information will be sent to the email address you've provided. If you have not received an email from the program lead by the day before the program, please contact the Library. Be sure to check your spam folder.

Using video:
The Library is committed to your safety in both physical and digital spaces. One way of ensuring this is by maintaining visibility. For this reason, we require all customers participating in our interactive, virtual children's and teen programs to keep their videos on the entire time during the program.
In this program, we also ask that parents appear on screen with their child/teen upon entering the virtual room, and remain on screen until the program lead has confirmed their registration. Afterwards, the child/teen may remain on screen alone.
During this Program, you will be using a third-party platform, Zoom, for the purpose of communication. This service may collect some personally identifying information about you, such as name, username, email address, & password. This service will treat the information it collects about you pursuant to its own privacy policy, which can be found here: Zoom Privacy Policy

In addition to its exhibitions and educational programs, the Science Centre presents the latest, biggest IMAX® movies in its seven-storey theatre.
Located in the heart of the Old Port of Montreal, the Montreal Science Centre is entirely devoted to science and technology, and is notable for the excellent quality of its activities, exhibitions and the use of interactive devices in an innovative environment, both educational and entertaining. This fall, families can visit four permanent exhibition halls:
Fabrik (for children 8 years and up): put your kids’ innovation skills to the test as they use their creativity to build technological solutions from random objects.
Human: explore the evolution (and the future!) of the human body through demonstrations and hands-on activities.
Explore: delve into the science behind motion, light, air, water, geometry and matter through interactive installations. Budding programmers can even experiment with code.
Mini Mondo: new, interactive exhibit for children up to the age of 7 that lets them explore their environment through touch, sight, sound and smell. Also, the IMAX®TELUS theatre will welcome back movie fans for great big adventures on the giant screen with Superpower Dogs 3D and Great Bear Rainforest 3D.
Health and safety measures are in place and tickets must be purchased online.
