Details:

About your guitar teacher Genna: Genna graduated from USC in 2015 with a BM in Popular Music after honing her skills and studying electric bass with Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report, Santana, Phil Collins). Her professional career in music began while still in school, appearing as a musician in several episodes of the tv series GLEE and performing around Los Angeles. In the past year, she has toured with artists such as Dustbowl Revival in Europe (American roots music), Alex Lahey across the US (alternative rock), and Sam Tsui throughout Southeast Asia (pop singer/songwriter). Genna enjoys using her real-world knowledge of the music industry to inspire her students the same way her instructors inspired her growing up.

Guitar classes are in two formats, 5-week series (meets once per week) and two-day series Intro to Guitar, Level I, Level II (meets two times for each Level).

5-week Series:

Intro to Guitar 5-week session:

This session is perfect for someone who has never played guitar and cannot yet read music. We will be starting from the very beginning, learning the names of the strings, how to press our fingers down to create a clear sound, and learning a few of the most common open chords as well as some familiar single-note melodies. There will be a final (virtual) performance in Week 5 to showcase some of what we have learned!

Beginner Guitar 5-week session: This session is designed for beginner students who are already familiar with the fundamentals, like string names and how to play single notes, but want to improve their skills. We will be learning a number of open chords and connecting them to songs the students may be familiar with, as well as working on some single-notes melodies and exercises for strengthening our fingers. We will also get creative with some beginning-level songwriting. There will be a final (virtual) performance in Week 5 to showcase some of what we have learned!
Intermediate Guitar 5-week session: This session is designed for students who have some previous guitar knowledge. Students at this level should already be familiar with a number of open chords and be able to switch between them smoothly. We will focus on learning more challenging power chord shapes, reading guitar tabs, and even learn the fundamentals of soloing. There will be a final (virtual) performance in Week 5 to showcase some of what we have learned!

Two-day Sessions:

Intro to Guitar: An introduction to guitar, perfect for students who have never learned anything about guitar and cannot yet read any music.

Level I:
During this session, students will learn beginning-level chords and fundamental techniques on guitar. We will learn how to count the frets, how to create clear sounds by pressing our fingers down on the neck, and how to strum the strings in various rhythms, all while having fun! Also a good start for students who have never played guitar but can read music.

Level II:
During this session, students will build on their skills by learning more open chords and simple single-note melodies. There will be an emphasis on moving seamlessly between the chords and connecting them to songs that the students may be familiar with.

Your Zoom meeting link will be emailed to you the first day of the class. If you do not receive your link by 1-hour before the start of your class.

If you decide to drop-in, we recommend to do the first day of the session. We also recommend taking the full session for the best experience.

You must have a guitar at home, as well as internet access on a laptop/computer/smartphone/ipad.

No refunds. Missed classes will not be refunded or made up.
