Families can watch a live concert this year and donate money that will go to local food banks

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train is chugging along and will make a special stop this season — your home!

First launched in 1999, the CP Holiday Train has travelled across Canada and the northern U.S. delighting spectators with its festive and brightly-lit train cars. At each stop along the route, the train has raised money, collected food, and highlighted the work of local food banks. Since 1999, the Holiday Train has raised close to $20 million and collected approximately 4.8 million pounds of food for local food banks.

The CP Holiday Train concert moves online

Once again this year, as a result of the ongoing pandemic, CP will host a virtual concert on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021 instead of its regular cross-country tour. Live music has always been a favourite part of the train’s annual traditions, and this year’s program aims to delight viewers with its Holiday Train at Home concert. Canadian Music Hall-of-Famer Steven Page and The Strumbellas will lead an all-star cast of performers.

Event raises money for local food banks

The 2021 event aims to raise money and awareness of food security issues, while ensuring donations still go to food banks in towns that ordinarily host CP Holiday Train events. CP will donate $1.24 million this year to 198 food banks in communities that ordinarily host CP Holiday Train events.

In a normal year, CP calls on attendees at local shows to make a cash or non-perishable food donation. Viewers seeking to donate will be directed to Food Banks Canada and Feeding America, the national organizations that support community food banks in their respective countries. Or the public can give to their local food bank.

“With the Holiday Train at Home concert, CP hopes to inspire support for food banks across North America,” said CP President and CEO Keith Creel. “Though we are disappointed we again cannot bring an in-person show to communities along our rail lines, it fills us with joy to bring together such outstanding musicians for a performance that will help feed Canadians and Americans in need. The CP family looks forward to bringing the Holiday Train back on tour as soon as it’s safe.”

The concert starts at 8 p.m. and can be viewed live on CP’s Facebook page, YouTube and its official website page.

If you miss the live show, an archived version will remain on the page for later viewing.
